Mayor Victorino has invoked the County Charter’s temporary appointment provision to maintain three acting department directors until replacements can be found.

The Maui County Council on Friday approved eight nominees to respective department directorships, and rejected three appointees.

Priority repairs continue on Maui to fix potholes caused by recent heavy rains and flooding in the Makawao and Wailuku (Kahului to Kīhei) districts.  

According to Victorino, more than 300 applications were received, including more than 100 applications for directorship and deputy director positions.

After two hours of emotional testimony focused on spending transparency and government response to last month’s severe flooding event at ʻĪao and Kahoma Valleys, the Maui County Council voted 7-2 on Tuesday to approve $5 million in reimbursement funds.

Public Works Director David Goode, and Deputy Water Director Paul Meyer will join Mayor Arakawa as featured guests of the program in a discussion moderated by Maui Communications Director Rod Antone.

The new edition will focus on the county’s plans to further improve roadways and other infrastructure currently maintained by the Department of Public Works.

The next edition of “County on Your Corner” with Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa will be held on Saturday, April 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Valley Isle Keiki Fest located on the University of Hawai`i – Maui College campus.

Two weeks after heavy rains undermined the Hanawana Bridge in East Maui, residents cut off by the partial collapse are nervous about ongoing erosion, but thankful that repairs have been expedited and are set to start next week.

Work begins on Tuesday, March 27, to clear the area and begin assessment for repairs.

Heavy rains in East Maui earlier this month undermined the Hanawana Bridge, cutting off transit for an estimated 40 residents since March 9.

The agreement calls for sidewalk repairs to proceed in the area along South Kihei Road fronting the Maui Schooner, with the trees to be left in place for the time being.

Public Works officials on Maui will be the featured guests on the upcoming edition of “Your County with Mayor Arakwa.”

The next edition of Mayor Alan Arakawa’s “County on Your Corner” will run from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, January 28, at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center in Kahului.

Mayor Arakawa hosts the gathering on Saturday, May 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lahaina Cannery Mall.

In an announcement made today, David Goode was appointment as Director of the Department of Public Works, and Rowena Dagdag-Andaya was named Deputy Director.
