New bills provide Hawaiian language and culture-based learning to county employees
The Maui County Council gave final approval Friday to legislation providing Hawaiian language and culture-based learning for county employees in partnership with University of Hawaiʻi – Maui College. The bills also implement requirements to include ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi in official documents pursuant to Charter Section 13-17.
Committee to review Maui County’s first climate plan
The Efficiency Solutions and Circular Systems Committee will meet on Nov. 18 at 1:30 p.m. with the goal of recommending passage of a bill to establish the Climate Action and Resiliency Plan for Maui County, according to Council Member Keani Rawlins-Fernandez.
Council committee agenda written in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi for first time
Voters approved a proposal to establish Maui County as “a bilingual government,” effective July 1, 2024. The charter amendment says the council is authorized to determine by ordinance which type of county documents will “be prepared and made available in both official state languages,” English and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, and establishes the Department of ʻŌiwi Resources.
Maui Council to consider resolution opposing construction of telescope facility on Haleakalā
Council Member Keani Rawlins-Fernandez announced today that the Maui County Council will consider Resolution 24-103 opposing construction of the proposed Air Force Maui Optical and Supercomputing Site Small Telescope Advanced Research facility, also known as AMOS STAR, on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
