#email scam

Recurring Sheriff impersonator incidents have prompted the Department of Law Enforcement to issue additional scam warnings. In recent weeks, several people have had callers claiming to be deputy sheriffs tell them that they have outstanding warrants because they failed to appear in court.

As National Cybersecurity Awareness Month approaches in October, the Maui County Council recognizes the increase in cyber security breaches and encourages public awareness on how to detect and avoid virus-generated email scams, Council Member Tom Cook announced.

These phishing attacks can be used in combination with emails and fake websites to trick victims into divulging sensitive information. Emails may have malicious Microsoft Word documents attached, which can lead to the installation of information stealer malware.

The Maui County Council issued a statement this afternoon after becoming aware of a Facebook ad and automated phone calls that they say “misinforms residents” about “retroactive tax assessments on property owners.”
