FBI’s ongoing role in the Lahaina wildfire disaster response
When a wildfire devastated the island of Maui on Aug. 8, killing at least 97 people and destroying more than 2,000 homes, the FBI offered assistance to law enforcement partners on Maui. Today that assistance continues as teams work to identify remains and confirm individuals who are unaccounted for.
Maui police request public help to file unaccounted for missing person report
As of today, Monday, Sept. 4, 2023, MPD has 110 missing person reports relating to the Lahaina wildfire, 41 of which are actively being investigated and are considered open. “As we move forward, a missing person report will be necessary to assist with this investigation,” police said.
Updated FBI list: 385 people remain unaccounted for following the Lahaina wildfire
After some names were removed and others were added, there is little change to the number of unaccounted for individuals following the Lahaina Wildfires Disaster on Aug. 8, 2023. The Maui Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation today released an updated list showing 385 individuals who have been reported unaccounted for.
