New video of yesterday’s deadly officer-involved shooting in Wailuku was released at a press conference today at the Wailuku Police Station. The 23 second encounter at the Kaohu Street, South Market Street intersection, came following a chase that ensued for approximately 12 minutes.

Maui Police Lt. Gregg Okamoto called the incident an “officer involved shooting” and said there were no police injuries to report at this time.

A man, described by Maui police as a wanted fugitive, surrendered to authorities without further incident this afternoon.

Members of the Department’s Special Response Team, were conducting checks within the vehicle when the suspect, Justin Waiki opened fire wounding an officer. Police say officers present returned fire resulting in the death of Waiki.

The sheriff’s also reported data from its Canine Unit conducted 72 explosive searches, 55 narcotic searches and 182 customs searches in 2017.

The search continues for Gregory Labar who escaped from Kahi Mohala in September. In the month of November, the Fugitive Task Force has cleared 134 warrants…
