The 12th Annual Hawaiʻi Energy Conference will convene leaders in Maui later this month to offer solutions addressing the most pressing energy challenges of today.

A Hawai‘i-based startup with ties to Japan is bringing state-of-the-art Japanese clean energy technology to Kaka‘ako Makai in Honolulu, to study its feasibility in the islands by operating its one wind turbine for research and demonstration purposes.

In a move to bolster sustainable transportation infrastructure and promote electric vehicle adoption, Maui County celebrated the grand opening of new electric vehicle charging stations today.

Hawaiian Electric has drafted an “Integrated Grid Plan: A pathway to a clean energy future” that aims to create a resilient, clean energy system powered by resources from Hawai‘i, for Hawai‘i.

The bills signed into law relate to climate mitigation, energy efficiency, renewable portfolio standards, and zero emission vehicle fueling rebates.

With the global urgency to slow climate change, Hawaiian Electric has set a goal by 2030 to cut carbon emissions from power generation 70% compared to 2005 levels and achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2045 or sooner.

In a letter to Democratic Congressional leaders, the coalition, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, calls on Congress to pass infrastructure legislation and to allocate funding in the upcoming reconciliation bill that addresses the rapid transition to a clean energy economy, climate change, and the environmental injustices faced by low-income communities, communities of color, and Tribal and indigenous communities.

Projections in the report indicate Hawai‘i is on target to meet the state’s goal established by the legislature in 2007 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to be equal to or below 1990 levels.

The Hawaiian Electric Companies have received more than 75 proposals after its call for more renewable energy resources to “accelerate the state’s transition off fossil fuels used for generations of electricity.”

Elemental Excelerator, an environmental startup funder, is seeking applicants in Hawaiʻi that further environmental innovations for funding of up to $1 million.

In an effort to reduce environmental impacts, the State of Hawai‘i finalized an agreement to power eight State facilities’ air conditioning with seawater.

Reps. Gabbard and Hanabusa voted to pass a new federal act that will fund critical clean energy, veteran, and military projects and programs for the State of Hawai‘i.

So far in 2016, Hawaii Energy reports it has saved customers in Hawaiʻi, Honolulu and Maui Counties more than $21 million on electric bills.

The 2016 Maui Energy Conference, scheduled for March 16–18, will bring together some of the best minds in the energy sector from Maui County, the state and the nation.

The building is one of 10 in the Capitol District that are undergoing energy-saving projects. The others are 80 percent complete and are slated for completion in September.
