The National Weather Service forecast for an extra large north-northwest swell, has County officials on Maui urging residents and businesses along exposed shorelines to take necessary precautions ahead of the event.

A small trade wind swell is forecast along east facing shores. This should pick up some Friday and into the weekend as our winds pick up in speed.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service say the advisory level surf is being generated by a northwest swell.

The advisory was issued as a northwest swell slowly diminishes, and combines with wind waves to produce combined seas at 10 feet or greater.

The forecast calls for 25 to 35 foot surf along the north shores, and 15 to 25 footers along the west shores. As large swells approach this winter season, big wave surfers are monitoring conditions for size and consistency on Oahu’s North Shore.

Surf will increase rapidly on Wednesday afternoon and evening, reaching 30 to 40 feet along north and west facing shores of Kauai and 20 to 30 feet along north shores of Maui and Molokai.
