“We have come today to lament with you, to mourn with you, and to grieve with you,” Bishop Silva said in his homily, standing next to rows of flickering candles; each representing a loved one lost in the devastating Lahaina wildfire on Aug. 8.

Bishop Larry Silva of Honolulu joined in the celebration by saying, “We join with the rest of the Church throughout the world in thanking God for the speedy election of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio as Pope Francis.”

The service is to give thanks for the Petrine ministry of Pope Benedict XVI, who will leave office the following day. Bishop Larry Silva said prayer will also be made for guidance on the cardinals who will elect the pope’s successor.
