As the hurricane Season came to a close at the end of November, the Department of Emergency Management is reminding Hawai’i residents to remain vigilant.

The Legislature will take up the issue of funding recovery efforts for natural disasters that have struck Hawai‘i during the January 2019 legislative session.

An informational outreach event will be held for farmers impacted by the recent series of wild fires in West Maui due to Lane and the flooding incurred by Olivia.

Maui Electric crews are continuing restoration efforts on Moloka‘i today to bring approximately 700 customers on the East End and Kaluakoi area back online.

Tropical Storm Olivia has passed by Maui County, allowing all county services to resume today, Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018.

Preparations are underway at airports, harbors and highways across the state in advance of possible weather impacts from Tropical Storm Olivia.

As of now, the only school closure in effect for Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018 will be for Hāna High and Elementary School. On Tuesday, all after school programs have been cancelled on Maui and the Big Island. 

All Hawai‘i island and Maui Nui lands under the jurisdiction of the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife are closing at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018.

The Coast Guard Captain of the Port set port condition YANKEE for Hawaiʻi and Maui County ports as of 8 a.m. Sunday in advance of Hurricane Olivia.

Mayor Arakawa said he is not anticipating the closure of county facilities because most of the impacts are forecast for the evening and early morning hours over the course of an 8-12 hour period between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. 

A Tropical Storm WARNING is now in effect for Maui County (including the islands of Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi and Kahoʻolawe) and Hawaiʻi County.

Hurricane Olivia had intensified overnight, with maximum sustained winds at 85 mph, and slowed its forward advance to 10 mph toward the west.

The National Weather Service has ISSUED a TROPICAL STORM WATCH for MAUI COUNTY.

Gov. Ige signed an emergency proclamation that will provide relief for disaster damages, losses and suffering caused by Hurricane Olivia.

“Two things that concern us at a time like this are emergency fatigue and the public underestimating the threat,” said HI-EMA Administrator Tom Travis.

The latest track could bring the outer circulation of Olivia close to the Hawaiian Islands starting on Tuesday night, according to CPHC forecasters.

Olivia has weakened to a Category 1 (74-95 mph) hurricane with sustained winds near 85 mph, and the system is moving toward the west near 15 mph.

The long-range forecast has Olivia crossing into the Central Pacific basin by late Saturday and nearing the islands on Tuesday or Wednesday as a Tropical Storm.

Hurricane Norman is now well East of Maui and has weakened in with sustained winds at 110 mph, at the upper edge of the Category 2 threshold.
