The updated rules follow the Maui County Council’s approval of Bill 158 in January, which amends the County Water Code to address water waste, promote responsible water use and ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply.

Council Vice-Chair Yuki Lei Sugimura issued a reminder about tonight’s community meeting focused on Upcountry water source development. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at the Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani.

The County of Maui Department of Water Supply is declaring a Stage 1 water shortage for the Central Maui System, effective today. The Central Maui service area includes Waiheʻe, Waiehu, Wailuku, Kahului, Spreckelsville, Pāʻia, Kūʻau, Māʻalaea, Kīhei, Wailea and Mākena.  The Department is implementing Stage 1 of its Water Shortage and Conservation Plan to reduce water demand by 10%.

Due to low surface water flow and lack of rainfall amid drought conditions, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply is advancing the Stage 1 water shortage to a Stage 2 water shortage for the Upcountry service area on Nov. 8, 2023.
