Starting today, hours at Maui’s second circuit court self-help center expand.  The center located at Hoapili Hale in Wailuku will be open Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Previously it was open only on Thursdays.

Maui Chief Judge Joseph Cardoza today denied a motion for a retrial in the case involving Steven Capobianco, who was found guilty in December of murder and second degree arson in the death of his pregnant ex-girlfriend Charli Scott.

The jury in the state vs Capobianco trial has answered “Yes” to the question of whether the murder of Carly “Charli” Scott was “especially heinous, atrocious and cruel.”

A day after finding Steven Capobianco guilty of 2nd degree murder and 2nd degree arson, the jury has yet to hear arguments on an enhanced sentencing allegation.

Jury deliberations resume at 10 a.m. today in the trial of a man accused of murdering his pregnant ex-girlfriend.

The prosecution wrapped up its rebuttal argument on Thursday morning in the Steven Capobianco murder trail, and the deliberation stage of the trail has now commenced.

The Defense presented its closing arguments on Wednesday in the ongoing murder trial of Steven Capobianco.

The court will proceed with the prosecution’s closing arguments at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29. The defense will present their closing arguments the following day, on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

The next phase of the ongoing murder trial of Steven Capobianco got underway on Wedneday with the defense calling to the stand a GIS map specialist and two employees from Mana Foods who had worked with the defendant.

A grassroots effort called STAE or “Steps to Avoid Eviction” aims to ensure that landlords get paid the rent they are owed and tenants are not evicted.

Community members on Maui who are unable to afford a lawyer will now have an opportunity to prepare their case with the assistance of a Self-Help Center staffed by volunteer attorneys.

Volunteer attorneys will help self-represented litigants by providing legal information on District Court and Family Court civil matters including landlord tenant disputes, collection issues, temporary restraining orders, and divorce cases. There is no charge for the service.

Judge Cardoza succeeds Judge Shackley Raffetto, the Judiciary’s 2011 Jurist of the Year, who will be retiring at the end of this month after 25 years on the bench.
