Maui County, Higashimatsushima City, Japan, formalize Friendship City agreement
Maui County and Higashi-matsu-shima City, Japan, formalized a Friendship City agreement during a ceremony on Maui. The partnership, signed by Mayor Richard Bissen, honors a bond rooted in disaster resilience following the 2023 Maui Wildfires and the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

The Kibou for Maui Project in Japan hosted a Maui leadership delegation and a youth cohort of 11 students from Lahainaluna High School to facilitate an educational and strategic exchange between Maui recovery effort leaders and disaster experts in Japan’s Tohoku region.
