#King Kalākaua

Hui Hānai has been awarded a contribution from Hawaiian Native Corporation to publish the letters of members of the Kalākaua family in a forthcoming book, “Letters of Queen Liliuokalani of Hawaii with Her Family, 1859–1900.”

In honor of King Kalākaua’s birthday on Nov. 16, The Friends of ʻIolani Palace hosts an essay contest that invites students to reflect on the enduring legacy of Hawaiʻi’s beloved monarch. The content encourages participants to explore how King Kalākaua’s contributions continue to shape our community today. Submissions will be accepted from Oct. 15 through Nov. 11, 2024. 

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center will present next month, for the first time on Maui, a performance of a historical dramatization about the life of Prince Kūhiō.

The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum presents “Fifty Years of Life: ʻUmeke from King Kalākaua’s Jubilee,” a third-floor installation in Hawaiian Hall offering insight into Kalākaua’s significant contributions to Hawaiian culture. The exhibit runs through June 2024.
