County of Maui ocean safety officers rescued a snorkeler caught in a rip current and three people aboard a capsized jet ski Thursday, during a second day of high surf from a north-northwest swell.

Forecast of XL surf prompts advisory from County of Maui

The National Weather Service forecast for an extra large north-northwest swell, has County officials on Maui urging residents and businesses along exposed shorelines to take necessary precautions ahead of the event.

High Surf Advisory for East, South Shores

“A large east swell generated by East Pacific Tropical Cyclone Barbara is spreading across the island chain this weekend. In addition, a new long period south-southwest swell is increasing surf along south facing shores,” according to the NWS forecast.

Giant Surf Forecast, Special Weather Statement Issued

A combination of giant surf, strong N winds, and near peak monthly high tides, overwash of low-lying coastal areas and roadways is likely Sunday to Monday.
