Gov. Josh Green announced significant progress in Kauaʻi’s recovery from Hurricane Lowell, with approximately 72% of the island’s power restored on Friday afternoon; and state, county and utility crews continuing around-the-clock work to restore essential services, reopen transportation routes and repair critical infrastructure.

State and county teams continue to assess damage as access is restored. After signing the document on Kauaʻi, Green submitted an expedited request to President Donald J. Trump for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration following Hurricane Lowell, seeking immediate federal assistance for Kauaʻi and Maui counties.

Maui County logged its second wettest season in 30 years during the 2025–2026 wet season. Rainfall totals ran 100 to 250% of average across most of the county and catastrophic flooding hit multiple areas statewide, according to a summary released this week by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board did not provide a cause of the crash, but said the pilot reported severe vibrations and loss of directional control while making a turn.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation will conduct a series of public meetings to provide the community with information about the Līhuʻe Airport Optimization Plan and to offer an opportunity for public input.

A California developer has initiated the environmental review process for a proposed Hanamāʻulu master-planned community on Kauaʻi that would add up to 1,250 new housing units to the island’s supply.

These plans aim to balance the benefits of tourism with the needs of residents, the preservation of natural and cultural resources, the residents’ quality of life, and providing an exceptional visitor experience on each island.
