Maui County leads state in vacation rental performance in November

While Maui County has had dismal hotel occupancy rates recently, November vacation rental performance statistics present a different picture. Maui has the highest vacation rental occupancy rates of any county in Hawaiʻi, but that’s not really saying much.

Maui vacation rental supply still up YTD 2022, despite inactive units in Lahaina

In December 2023, Maui County had more available rental unit nights than any other county in the state, at 233,000 available nights this past month, per the Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism. This comes despite the fact vacation rental units in Lahaina continue to be inactive due to the Aug. 8 Maui wildfires.

Maui County hotels led Hawai’i in October 2022, with revenue per available room of $344 and average daily rate of $528. But Maui County’s occupancy was 65.1%, lowest in the state.

Maui County Vacation Rental Demand for July 2021 Down 18% from July 2019

In July 2021, Maui County’s vacation rental occupancy improved to 83.4%, which was 1.9 percentage points higher than July 2019, according to the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority. But unit demand of 186,100 nights was 18.2% less than in 2019. The reason occupancy was higher is that Maui County’s vacation rental supply — while the highest of the four Hawaiian counties — was down 20% from 2019. It’s now at 223,100 available unit nights.

January Occupancy Rate at Nearly 40% for Maui County Vacation Rentals

In January 2021, the occupancy rate for Maui County vacation rentals was 39.6 percent, a decrease of 46.1 less percentage points from January 2020, according to the latest monthly report from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority.
