Street art project in Kīhei completed, final comments requested

The Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization announced the completion of South Maui Quick Build: Street Art Project at the intersection of Kenolio Road and Alulike Street in Kīhei. The final design captured the essence of the Kalepolepo Fishpond (also known as Ko’ie’ie Fishpond) on the makai side of the intersection, and the Kūlanihāko’i wetlands and sand dunes on the mauka side. 

Longest predator-exclusion fence in the nation under construction at Maui’s Kanahā Pond

The new 14,785 foot predator-exclusion fence under construction at Maui’s Kanahā Pond Wildlife Sanctuary, will be the longest of its kind the nation when complete.

Hawaiʻi Land Trust awarded $803,700 grant for Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes & Wetlands Refuge

The Hawai‘i Land Trust has been awarded an $803,700 grant from NOAA for the federal Climate-Ready Coasts initiative.  The funds will be used at the 277-acre Waiheʻe Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge on Maui.  It will also fund restoration of taro fields and the fishpond at Kapoho, which is located within the refuge.

Conservation land designation resurfaces for discussion in committee on Thursday

The Maui Council committee on Agriculture, Diversification, Environment and Public Transportation will reconvene July 6 at 1:30 p.m. to discuss Resolution 23-146, requesting that the Conservation Planning Committee review and provide recommendations on the possible acquisition or management of certain lands for conservation purposes.

Maui County wetlands map to help mitigate flooding, protect environment

The county’s Department of Planning is creating a public tool that will help reduce flood risk for human life and property while protecting and restoring Maui County’s important natural wetland ecosystems, county officials announced.
