A 41-year-old California man suffered multiple injuries to his body after falling approximately 20 feet from a waterfall onto rocks below in the area known as “Bamboo Forest” in the East Maui town of Kailua.

A 33-year-old man from Perth Australia was airlifted from a ravine after falling 50-feet from a steep ledge at the Waihou Springs Forest Reserve in Olinda.

The 41-year-old Haʻikū man was preparing to jump off of the waterfall on the Bamboo Forest Trail in Kailua when he lost his footing and fell to the pond below.

Crews found the 58-year-old man and his 26-year-old daughter on one of the former pineapple field roads. They were uninjured and were driven out to their vehicle.

The initial call started out as a rescue in the area often referred to as the “Commando Trail.” When firefighters were responding to that call, a second group of hikers was also reported to be stranded at the area often referred to as the “Bamboo Forest Trail.”

Pāʻia firefighters and a Kahului rescue crew, aided by an East Maui Irrigation employee, found the group about a 90 minute hike into the trail, at an area often referred to as the “Lava Tube.” The group was safe and were awaiting daylight and stream flows to recede before exiting.

According to the report, there were 16 spinal cord injuries at Mākena between 2009 and 2012; 5 at Kāʻanapali; 3 at Hāmoa; and 3 at Polo Beach. The leading cause of spinal cord injuries in Hawaiʻi between 2009 and 2012 was ocean activities, with 151 ocean-related incidents reported across the state.

A visitor from Argentina was airlifted from the Kailua area of East Maui on Sunday after suffering injuries while hiking in the area often referred to as the “Bamboo Forest.”
