DHHL secures $22.3M in federal funds under the Native Hawaiian Housing Block Grant

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands announced Friday it has secured a substantial $22.3 million grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development under the Native Hawaiian Housing Block Grant.

In a milestone initiative, Department of Hawaiian Home Lands Director Kali Watson signed the program’s first in-house building permit for its Yorktown transitional housing project Monday, Sept. 30, 2024. This new approach is set to streamline the building permit process and will enable the department to advance on the development of more than 20 homestead projects statewide.

In the wake of the wildfires, this initiative seeks to alleviate the financial burdens that have arisen, enabling affected families to regain their stability and rebuild their lives.

Schatz, Cole secure record $1.3B for Native housing

US Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) and US Rep. Tom Cole (R-La.) – chairs of the Senate and House Appropriations Subcommittee on Housing, respectively – secured more than $1.34 billion in funding for Native housing programs as part of a six-bill Fiscal Year 2024 appropriations package that was passed by Congress and signed into law last week. The funding is a record increase of $324 million dollars from last year.

Financial Assistance Available for Lessees on Hawaiian Home Lands

The program will assist homesteaders struggling to pay their mortgage, utilities, property taxes, insurance, or association fees as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brian Schatz (D-HI), chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, introduced the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Reauthorization that is bipartisan legislation building upon successful Native American housing programs at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
