#nahiku fire

The incident was reported at around 4:06 a.m. on Wednesday by a passing motorist who reported seeing lots of smoke in the Nāhiku area near Mile 22 of Hana Hwy.

Hāna firefighters responded to a structure fire that destroyed a residence off of Hāna Highway in the Upper Nāhiku area in East Maui.

When fire crews from Hāna arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke showing from the eaves of the single family home, and some flames near the front door. The incident was reported at 7:57 a.m., at a 500 square foot cottage located in Upper Nāhiku.

A Nahiku home was destroyed by fire overnight, when the homeowner left the oven on and unattended, officials said. The fire was first reported at 11:46 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2012.
