United States Attorney Clare E. Connors announced that Jose Elias Camacho, 34, of Maui, was sentenced Monday by US District Judge Susan Oki Mollway to 144 months in prison for trafficking in fake oxycodone pills containing fentanyl that resulted in an overdose death.

Two people, 31 year old Kapua Harrell and 35 year old Sherron Falces, were both arrested for multiple narcotics offenses.

A doctor and four employees from the Bade Medical Clinic, located in Hilo, Hawaiʻi were indicted by a federal grand jury.

US Sen. Brian Schatz joined colleagues in introducing a bill to establish and fund research on opioid misuse and alternatives to treatment and pain prevention.

The increase in cocaine abuse is significant even though the usage is low in comparison to most of the other drugs. Methamphetamine, or ice use, declined by 22% year over year, but is still at about 0.7%, which is about four times the average ice use found in workforce drug testing on the mainland.

Police say the male suspect pictured in the images was able to flee the scene with “a fair amount” of Oxycodone pills and was last seen walking out the front door towards Kula Highway.

Maui police are searching for a male suspect wanted for the armed robbery of the pharmacy at the Longs Drugs store at Kulamalu. The suspect, at gunpoint, was able to gain access to numerous prescription medications before fleeing the area with an undisclosed amount of prescription medication.
