Pāʻia Elementary School will remain closed through Tuesday, Oct. 14. In consultation with the state Department of Health, HIDOE is conducting wipe testing on campus and ash testing off-site to detect possible heavy metals.

Pāʻia Elementary School will remain closed to students and staff through Friday, Oct. 3, as post-fire restoration efforts continue. Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 1, the school will pivot to asynchronous (self-paced) distance learning.

Professional cleaning of the campus was completed on schedule over the weekend; however, soot continues to impact the campus, and additional precautions are being taken to ensure a safe return for students and staff.

Although the campus did not sustain direct fire damage from the Pāʻia brushfire, cleaning and restoration from smoke and soot damage is needed.

The Holomua Fire that started Tuesday afternoon in Pāʻia on Maui burned an estimated 380 acres and was 50% contained this morning, with no forward progress reported overnight.

An afternoon brush fire along Baldwin Avenue burned a total of 7 acres before being brought under control Monday.
