Rat lungworm larvae are present in snail slime when the snails are exposed to stress, according to findings from University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa researchers.

Rat lungworm disease, which is found in Hawaiʻi, can be transmitted to humans by at least 13 species, according to new research.

The Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed a case of rat lungworm disease (angiostrongyliasis) contracted on Maui. The individual is a resident of Maui and is the first person this year to test positive for angiostrongyliasis in Hawai‘i. In 2019, there were a total of 9 reported cases.

A case of rat lungworm disease was confirmed in an adult visitor to Hawai‘i Island, bringing to seven the total amount of confirmed cases of angiostrongyliasis in Hawai‘i so far this year.

The sixth individual was an adult resident of the US mainland and was traveling in West Hawai‘i when they were infected with rat lungworm disease.

With the additional confirmed cases of rat lungworm disease, this brings the statewide total to five in 2019, all of which were contracted on Hawai‘i Island.

The individual is a resident of East Hawai‘i and is the third person from Hawai‘i County to test positive for rat lungworm or angiostrongyliasis in 2019.

The state’s second case of rat lungworm disease has been confirmed on Hawai‘i Island, according to the state Department of Health.

The second case of rat lungworm disease confirmed this year was an adult resident of Maui who became ill in mid-February and was briefly hospitalized.
