Paltin pointed to news reports which indicated there were 20,000 rental cars on Maui prior to the pandemic last year, more than all other islands combined.

many vehicles are already reserved at most major rental companies through August, with the daily rental fee for available vehicles often being significantly higher than usual. “We have heard reports that some vehicles are being rented for as much as $700 per day,” said John De Fries, President and CEO of the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority.

“Most of the car rental companies are starting to send cars back to the mainland.  We’ve had quite a reduction–although it doesn’t look like it–but we’ve had a reduction in vehicles that we house here at the airport,” said Moniz.
