Ethical return: Bishop Museum sending latte stones and 10,000 artifacts back to Mariana Islands
Beginning in August 2025, Bishop Museum, the State of Hawai‘i Museum of Natural and Cultural History, will initiate a phased return of more than 10,000 pieces from the Museum’s permanent collection to the Mariana Islands, including the latte stones currently on display in front of Hawaiian Hall.
Schatz applauds return of sacred cultural item to Hawaiʻi
US Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i), vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, celebrated the return to Hawaiʻi of a sacred ‘ahu‘ula (feathered cape), worn by Chief Keaoua Kekuaokalani in the Battle of Kuamoʻo in 1819.
More ancestral remains returned to Office of Hawaiian Affairs in repatriation journey
This is the largest collection of iwi kūpuna the Hawaiian delegation is receiving on its five-stop journey in Germany and Austria. The final repatriation ceremony will be held on February 14 at the Vienna Natural History Museum. The delegation will return home to Hawaiʻi on February 15. Arrangments have been made with the appropriate parties to rebury the iwi kūpuna on their islands of origin, so they may finally return to their moe loa (eternal sleep).
2nd Inaugural Address: Gov. Ige Seeks to Transform Economy
During his inaugural address, Gov. Ige focused on three specific areas–Education, Housing and Sustainability–saying, “I believe our legacy will rest on how well we meet the challenges of the 21st century, and how well we begin to transform our economy.”
