#Seat Belt Enforcement

Beginning Monday, May 11, 2026, the Maui Police Department Traffic Division will participate in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign. Motorists will see heightened traffic enforcement and patrols, which will continue through Sunday, May 31, 2026, and include the use of unmarked patrol vehicles to enforce seat belt and child passenger restraint laws.

In 2021, 63% (20 of the 32) vehicle occupants that died in Hawaiʻi, were not wearing seat belts. Preliminary data from Jan. 1 to May 25, 2022, shows 8 of the 22 motor vehicle occupants who died in a crash were reported as not wearing their seat belt.

The Maui Police Department will be conducting a two-week operation targeting seat belt violations from May 13 to June 2, 2019.

Being properly secured in a vehicle is the single most effective way to avoid being killed in a crash. The minimum fine for not wearing a seat belt is $102.

The Maui Police Department issued a total of 1,596 citations during a two-week Click It Or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign that ran from May 23 to June 5, 2016.

The Maui Police Department issued a total of 2,640 citations, 588 of them for seat belt violations, during the two week “Click It Or Ticket” enforcement campaign that ran from May 11 to 25, 2015.

The Maui Police Department will participate in a two week campaign targeting seat belt violations starting on Monday, May 11, and running through Monday, May 25, 2015. The fine is $102 and will be issued to the operator of the vehicle.
