#South swell

A large south swell will gradually fill in on Friday and peak on Saturday near warning thresholds, according to the National Weather Service. Peak afternoon high tides, combined with elevated water levels running about a half a foot higher than predicted and a large south swell filling in, will lead to minor flooding along shoreline and low-lying coastal areas through Saturday. Water levels should fall below thresholds during peak afternoon high tides Sunday.

An officer with the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement, estimates one wave off Diamond Head this morning, topped 25-feet in height. Itʻs the highest south shore surf reported in more than 25-years, according to the department.

High surf on south-facing shores is expected to peak today at 18-24 feet, and residents and visitors are cautioned to stay away from impacted areas.

A historic south swell continues to produce dangerous breaking waves along the south shores into Monday.

A swell that originated off the coast of New Zealand stormed through the south Pacific and continued to push its way to the Hawaiian Islands.

An east swell generated by Tropical Storm Marie will begin entering Hawaiian waters tonight, creating advisory level surf along the east facing shores of Maui County, according to the National Weather Service.

When the tradewinds start blowing in the 15-30 mph range, that usually translates to a good east/northeast swell, and sometimes some wrap around south swell when it is very windy.

Few expected this south swell to hang around for as long as it has, nor that it would stay the same size – for the most part.

A surprise east swell brings waves bigger than anticipated to save surfers from summer flatness, in between the larger south swells.

The forecast is showing flat, flat and more flat around the entire island. With a little exception of a blown out/windy little east swell hitting east facing shores, the summer has wound down following the best early season south swells in years.

Without a doubt the best run of south swell to happen on Maui in recent history is sadly over. But summer has just begun.

A series of south swells arriving in the islands beginning today has ocean safety officials on Maui taking extra precautions. By 11 a.m., crews had already made an estimated 30-40 personal contacts with the public at Kamaʻole Beach Park III. When in doubt, authorities advise, don’t go out.

The south swell season has begun with a big swell on the way.
