Several bills advanced by the House Committee on Labor address priorities set by the House Majority at the outset of the 2026 Legislative Session, particularly relating to workforce shortages, preserving the social safety net, and diversifying and strengthening the state’s economy.

The governor has until July 9 to issue final vetoes from the list, to sign them into law, or to allow them to become law without his signature.

Hawaiʻi Children’s Action Network Speaks! (HCAN Speaks!), a nonprofit advocacy organization supporting Hawaiʻi families, is celebrating the passage of several bills that are aimed at giving working families relief.

Legislators identified five top priority issues impacting Hawaiʻi’s youth and families, including tax credits for household and dependent care services, funding for community schools, paid family leave, e-cigarette regulations, and universal free school breakfast and lunches. 

A portion of a bill enacted to curb vacation rentals in residential areas will go into effect Jan. 1 and expand the scope of the transient accommodations tax law to include certain shelters and vehicles with sleeping accommodations.

Older registered voters on Maui overwhelmingly support a tax credit for family caregivers, according to a new AARP Hawaiʻi survey of registered voters 40 and older. That support is widespread and cuts across the political spectrum. Most respondents said the state does not provide enough support to family caregivers, according to the survey results.

Members of the Hawaiʻi State Legislature’s Keiki Caucus were joined by community advocates to unveil the 2024 Keiki Caucus Bill Package, which is comprised of five priority bills aimed at addressing the health and welfare of Hawaiʻi’s youth. 

The measure would double the standard deduction for individual filers from $2,200 to $5,000, and double the personal exemption from $1,144 to $2,288. Additionally, Hawaiʻi’s renters would see relief through increased tax credits.
