The famed Peʻahi “Jaws” surf break along Maui’s north shore drew a spectacular show of talent from experienced big wave surfers over the weekend as safety crews stood by to assist. These images were captured by photographer, Patrick Wardle who shared the images with us.

A historic south swell continues to produce dangerous breaking waves along the south shores into Monday.

Baldwin Beach Park and Hoʻokipa Beach Park are closed today (Saturday, Jan. 16), through Monday, Jan. 18, because of forecasts of dangerous conditions from warning level surf along north-facing shores.

All beach parks have been assessed and are open Monday, except Baldwin and Hoʻokipa beach parks, according to the Department of Parks and Recreation.

A 30-year-old Canadian man was assisted to shore when he became caught in a strong rip current while bodyboarding at Nāpili Bay.

The forecast calls for 25 to 35 foot surf along the north shores, and 15 to 25 footers along the west shores. As large swells approach this winter season, big wave surfers are monitoring conditions for size and consistency on Oahu’s North Shore.
