Maui will allow passive recreation at Maui Beaches effective Saturday, May 16th for a trial period of two weeks (May 16 to 30). This is on a temporary basis only and will be reassessed.

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino provided a glimpse into the thought process for reopening businesses on Maui saying, “Public health has to be the priority… followed by community–that our communities open up with some resiliency… and of course the economic part… That is the triangle that needs to be put together.”

“This will be a defining week for us,” said Mayor Victorino. “The last two weeks have set the tone… I’m looking at opening parks and I’ll probably be announcing that tomorrow, depending on if the governor approves it or not.”
Mayor Interview: When Will Maui Reopen for Business?
When asked when Maui will reopen, Mayor Victorino said, “It’s based on health issues as well as timetables… How are we doing as far as the outbreak is concerned? Do we have enough masks… There are some services that have been deemed unessential, that now become essential… we’re looking at all of these different aspects… Overall, I feel it should be in the not-too-distant future.”
