VIDEO: Polynesian Voyaging Canoe, Hōkūleʻa Arrives in Māʻalaea

The Polynesian voyaging canoe, Hōkūleʻa arrived at Māʻalaea Harbor on Maui last night as part of the Mālama Hawaiʻi leg of its worldwide voyage.

The voyage is reportedly based in island wisdom, ocean connections, and global lessons, according to information provided by the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

The fist leg of the journey began on Hawaiʻi Island earlier this month, and continues throughout the island chain into October, according to PVS reports.

According to the PVS website, the initial leg will cover an estimated 1,000 nautical miles with stops at an estimated 30 ports across the state, before embarking on a voyage to the South Pacific in May 2014.

The crew of the Hōkūleʻa is conducting the sail alongside sister voyaging canoe Hikianalia.

According to the sail plan, the vessel will make its next stop in Lahaina, Maui in late June or early July.

Lahaina is home to the Hui o Waʻa Kaulua voyaging society where members are trying to complete construction of the 62-foot double-hulled Moʻokiha o Piʻilani.
