#Kahului Airport runway

The meeting takes place tonight from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Maui High School Cafeteria at 660 Lono Ave. in Kahului. There will be a presentation at 6:15 p.m. with a question-and-answer portion to follow.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation will be shutting down Kahului Airport Runway 523 to accommodate cargo operations, assisting in airlifting goods and necessities to Maui. 523 is a short runway that will not affect any commercial flights, but will have an impact on the general aviation community. HDOT will prioritize commercial flights.

“Previous resurfacing projects have extended the pavement’s useful life, however, they did not address the deteriorated subbase that is the source of recurring surface cracking.” 

Work is slated to take place in the overnight hours from midnight to 7 a.m. nightly, Sundays through Thursdays, beginning on Sunday, July 13, 2014.

Governor Neil Abercrombie released more than $44 million for various capital improvement projects across the state, including $3.3 million for the imaging department at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The project includes a complete re-wiring of the runway light and taxiway light circuits. The anticipated completion date for the federally funded project is May 2012.

Councilmember Mike White will be featured as a guest on “The Maui Breakfast Club” radio program on Wednesday, February 22, 2012. The topic of discussion will be the recently-announced options for repairing the runway at Kahului Airport.

The plans ranged from $34 to $134 million with the least costly resulting up to a 10 week closure of the runway for wide body aircraft, and the most expensive requiring an EIS—but allowing for the continuance of wide body air traffic. The repairs, transportation officials say, are needed to address decades of asphalt overlay, and an increased presence of foreign object debris.

The state DOT will conduct airfield maintenance work at Kahului Airport for a second weekend in a row. The work was described as routine maintenance, and will take place between 12:01 to 5 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011.

Plans to repair and possibly expand the Kahului Airport runway are under discussion, following a notification that the FAA will no longer pay for patchwork repairs.
