#Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety

The Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety will begin installing smoke alarms at high risk homes in October, under the federally funded Smoke Alarm Maui Program.

Maui Firefighters Derrick Chai and Willie Barut were promoted to the rank of Fire Captain. Both will begin their new assignments on June 1, 2011.

The Maui Fire Department announced the appointment of Lee Mainaga as the new Public Information Officer for the Department.

This is the second largest Captain class in recent history, and helps to fill some recent retirements in the department.

The Haiku Fire Station proposed for construction in 2012 would feature two offsite wind turbines, a heli pad and plantation style structure on six acres of land in the ahupuaa of Pauwela.

Fire department rescue personnel are on scene at a helicopter crash that occurred around 1:30 this afternoon in Hana. Initial reports indicate that there were two people injured in the incident. Both were transported by medevac to Maui Memorial Medical Center.  No further details are available at this time.
