Due to the powerful approaching storms, all camping areas on Maui, Molokaʻi and Oʻahu are closed until further notice. The closure went into effect at 1 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

The Maui County Department of Water Supply reports Friday morning that, while trace levels of bacteria are dropping in affected Upper Kula system waterlines, a boil water advisory continues for residents of Waipoli, Polipoli and Middle roads, Kula Highway at Kēōkea, Thompson Road and ʻUlupalakua.

The County of Maui Department of Water Supply reports this morning that water sample testing has removed Naʻalae Road in Kula from the list of areas where a boil water advisory remains in effect. Residents of Naʻalae Road no longer need to boil water as a precaution against findings of trace amounts of E. coli in the Upper Kula water system.

With today’s announcement of the reopening of select DLNR Division of State Parks units across the state, park managers and aquatic biologists are reminding people to be respectful of the places that are shared with Hawai‘i’s marine creatures.

On Maui, state parks that are reopened for exercise and hiking only during restricted hours are: Polipoli Springs State Recreation Area and Mākena State Park (except Puʻu o Laʻi aka “Little Beach”). Areas on Maui that remain completely closed include: Puʻu o Laʻi “Little Beach” section of Mākena State Park; Halekiʻi-Pihana and ʻĪao Valley State Monuments; and Kaumahina, Wailua and Puaʻakaʻa Wayside Parks. 

The Kula Forest Reserve and Polipoli Spring Recreation Area reopened following completion of a two-month project for road repairs and fuel mitigation work.

The state will close the Kula Forest Reserve and Polipoli Springs State Recreation Area for two months beginning on Sept. 4, 2018.

I am writing to you to request an immediate removal of them as it is creating a hazardous situation to both motorists and pedestrians.

An 18-year-old Maui man was located uninjured at the Polipoli Recreation area in Kula, shortly after a search party was launched to find him.

The two friends were on their way down the mountain after visiting Polipoli Spring Recreation Area when the woman said the brakes on her van faded out.

Division of State Parks – Polipoli State Park will be closed, but all other Maui State Parks will remain open on Wednesday, and with considerations based on storm assessment for closure on Thursday.

The Kula Forest Reserve, Walpoli Access Road, Kahananui Forest Reserve, and Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area will close from Sept. 12-23, 2016.

A 29-year-old man and 30-year-old woman from Lahaina were rescued from the Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area, in Upcountry Maui after they became disoriented and lost on Sunday night.

Maui’s Kula Forest Reserve and Polipoli State Recreation Area are scheduled to reopen on April 3, 2015, following the August 2014 closure due to damage from Hurricane Iselle.

Why is the Kula Forest Reserve / Polipoli still closed? There has been ample time for cleanup and repair. I realize Polipoli is not a money-maker for the County, but it is one of the best places on the island and is about the only truly public hunting area on the island

The Makawao Forest Reserve, which has been closed since Monday due to a brush fire, reopens today. The reserve was the site of a fire that burned 10 acres over four days.

The forest reserve will remain closed to the public due to safety concerns through at least Thursday, and possibly longer, according to officials with the state DLNR.

Maui’s Polipoli Springs State Recreation Area on Maui remains closed following heavy rains last week. Road conditions at the Maui park remain hazardous since the facility was closed on Friday.
