Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia continued the French Polynesia leg of the Moananuiākea Voyage and 50th birthday celebrations of Hōkūleʻa this past week, sailing from the island of Tahiti to Moʻorea to deepen cultural ties and spark dialogue around ocean protection.

Following their historic arrival in Papeʻetē on June 28, Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia hosted dozens of schoolchildren, families, and community members aboard the canoes. This week, the crew of both canoes resumed their journey through the islands of French Polynesia, beginning with a meaningful and emotional four-day stop in Mataiea, Tahiti.

The crew of the Polynesian voyaging canoe, Hōkūleʻa sighted distant lights on the horizon, Saturday—marking their first visual confirmation of land since departing Hilo on June 3. A safety crew aboard the Hikianalia confirmed it was the island of Rangiroa in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia.

The Polynesian Voyaging Society announced that the Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia will now depart from Hilo on Tuesday morning, June 3, after postponing the voyage due to weather conditions.

In its 2023 Annual Purpose & Impact Report, the World Surf League’s One Ocean Initiative celebrates its key environmental milestones, such as protecting and restoring 45,374 hectares of critical surfing ecosystems and planting 100,000 corals, while amplifying community involvement.

Polynesian voyaging canoes Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia returned home to Oʻahu last week after a successful voyage to and from Hawaiʻi’s ancestral homeland of Tahiti.  

After 17 days at sea sailing down Kealaikahiki, the ancient searoad to Tahiti, the Hōkūleʻa Crew sighted Arutua, one of 80 islands and atolls in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. 

Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia departed from Tautira Wednesday morning on the final leg of the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage, sailing home to Hawaiʻi.

It’s been over 40 years since Polynesian voyaging canoe, Hōkūleʻa first arrived in Mataiea, which is known for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.

There is a nice straight south swell on its way to the islands, adding to an already memorable summer season.

A south swell is lighting up certain spots, but the wind and big tidal swings have made things funky for the most part.

A decent south swell is set to build tomorrow, starting at 2 to 5-feet, and should peak at 3 to 7-feet on Wednesday.

This particular swell was more of a southwester, meaning that the west tilt made it miss some spots not facing west like Ma’alaea, while other spots thrived with the more favorable direction.

The second big south swell of the summer is a day late — big surprise. On Maui during the summer, you can’t help but become skeptical of these mysterious, elusive south swells.

The forecast is showing flat, flat and more flat around the entire island. With a little exception of a blown out/windy little east swell hitting east facing shores, the summer has wound down following the best early season south swells in years.

With perfect tides, the conditions all aligned perfectly to make this swell one for the ages this past weekend — and it still continues.

The south swell has finally arrived and is showing signs of possibly being one of the best swells of the whole summer.
