Chocolate Covered Spam? Lahaina Bakery’s Surprise Hit

Four days before celebrating their first year in business, the Banyan Tree Deli and Bakery have discovered an unlikely top-selling snack.

It may not be your average café fare but the Front Street outfit are causing a stir with their chocolate covered Spam.

“My wife thought it would be a great idea.” Said owner and master baker Darren Hagobian.

“We started out selling chocolate covered bacon. We sold 4lbs in our first week, 8lbs in week two and week three saw us sell 12lbs. Now we sell 4lbs a day.

“The Spam just seemed like a natural progression and people love it. People come here just to taste it and take pictures of it. It‘s been a huge success!”

The milk chocolate-covered slices of Spam and strips of bacon are priced at $2.99. The family business, which opened its doors on May 10, 2010, also offers a range of delights such as strawberry pizza pie, red velvet cup cakes, rocky road and more. They also boast a wide selection of cakes, muffins, sandwiches and coffees.
