NWS: Large Short Period Swell to Peak on Sunday
By Wendy Osher
The National Weather Service is forecasting the arrival of a “large short-period north-northeast well,” that is expected to build overnight and peak on Sunday.
The agency issued a high surf advisory for the north and east facing shores of Maui, Molokaʻi, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island, and Niʻihau beginning at midnight on Saturday, Nov. 9, and continuing until 6 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11.
Forecasters with the NWS say surf will be in the 10 to 15 foot range along the north facing shores, and 6 to 10 feet along the east facing shores.
The conditions are expected to produce strong braking waves, and strong rip currents, that can make swimming difficult and dangerous.
The agency advises that swimmers, beach goers, and surfers, heed the advice of ocean safety officials.
The advisory states, “Know your limits; When in doubt, do not go out.”
