A visitor from San Bernardino, California died after being pulled from the ocean in waters off of Puʻu Kekaʻa or Black Rock in West Maui on Wednesday, June 25, 2014.

Maui police say beach goers found 63-year-old Eugene Chu floating motionless and face down in the ocean about 75 yards from shore at around 11:22 a.m.

According to police reports, beach goers pulled Chu to shore and performed
cardiopulmonary resuscitation until emergency personnel arrived and continued lifesaving efforts.

Despite life saving attempts, police say Chu died.

The case has been classified as a miscellaneous fatal accident, and the cause of death is pending autopsy results, police said.
