Polls Close Today for “Name a Baby Sea Turtle Contest”

Voting polls close today, Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, for the Maui Ocean Center’s “Name a Baby Sea Turtle Contest.”
The public is invited to vote via the Maui Ocean Center’s Facebook page, with six winners to be awarded a special behind-the-scenes Sea Turtle Encounter, and have their photo posted on the aquarium website.
Contest winners will be announced this week.

Turtle A: Names being considered include: Alaula – Light of Breaking Dawn since Turtle A is adventurous and a leader, the dawn usually represents the “first” of something, just as a leader is always the “first.”; Ikaika – strong, determined, energetic; ‘Eleu – lively, energetic, spry, nimble, agile, alert; and Kao lele – Firework, complements personality and was born on 4th of July. Turtle B: Characteristics: gentle, friendly, wants to play, silly, goof. Names being considered include: Pā’ani – playful; Le’ale’a Makuakai – to have fun or to have a good time (Le’ale’a); “Guardian of the sea”, to take care of the ocean (Makuakai); and Kūnoa – Freedom, complements personality and was born on 4th of July. Turtle C: Characteristics: Inquisitive nature, voracious when it comes to eating. Names being considered include: Pololi – hungry; Niele – Inquisitive, nosey; and Makoa – Brave, Fearless, complements personality and was born on 4th of July. Photo courtesy Maui Ocean Center.

Turtle D: Characteristics: Meaty, quick grower, patient, curious. Names being considered include: Akamai – Clever, intelligent; Ahonui – patient, enduring; Wiki Wiki – quick,fast; Polunu hākilo – chubby, snoop; and Lipaki – Liberty, complements personality and was born on 4th of July. Turtle E: Characteristics: Shy, sensitive, prefers to stay behind-the-scenes. Names being considered include: Kanuha – One who sulks; Hila – shy, bashful, timid; Ūpē – humble, bashful. Photo courtesy Maui Ocean Center.
