Read-Only, One-Night-Only Performance of ‘The Crucible’
Wailuku · ʻĪao Theater · Doors open at 6 p.m. · Show starts at 6:30 p.m.
A volunteer group of actors will present a free performance of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible at the Historic ʻĪao Theater in Wailuku as part of the theater’s One-Night-Only (ONO) series. The play will be performed in a read-only voice format. All parts will be read from the script; the stage will be sparsely set. The play is directed by Jennifer Rose. The play is about 19 men and women and two dogs, who were convicted and hanged for witchcraft in a small village in eastern Massachusetts in 1692.Their bodies were buried in shallow graves but their names were not forgotten. In 1953, Miller’s play opened in New York to tell the story of what has become known as the Salem Witch Trials. While The Crucible is about witchcraft and the tragic consequences of a failed love affair, it is also about much more, which is why the play has become Miller’s most performed. 25th Celebration of Hula O Nā Keiki, Nov. 13–15

The 25th anniversary celebration of “Hula O Nā Keiki”, Maui’s only children’s hula competition, is set to take place November 13-15, 2015 at the Kā‘anapali Beach Hotel in West Maui. The competition commemorates the art of hula, one of Hawai‘i’s richest traditions, and brings the dance to light through the movement of keiki trained in both modern and ancient forms. Participants ranging in age from five to 17 will compete in their respective categories for both solo and pair titles. There’s also an opportunity to win part of the $13,000 in cash and prizes awarded each year.The competition includes a judge’s interview as well as hula performances in both kahiko (ancient) and ‘auana (modern) dance categories. Dancers are also judged on their proficiency in the Hawaiian language, and the appropriateness of their costume. Artists from Japan and across Hawai‘i will demonstrate amazing skill and technique as they transform ice into art during the two-day event. The ice chips will fly from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, as visiting artists from Japan demonstrate their skills in a freestyle ice-carving exhibition. “The Maui Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Robert E. Wills, will present a challenging and exciting concert on Oct. 17 and 18 at ʻĪao Theater in Wailuku. The program will begin with Franz Josef Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto. The concerto will feature Pam Humphrey as the soloist. The first half of the program will close with a reprise from the 2015 season of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto. The concerto will feature three Maui soloists—Rona Londrigan, violin; Jazzlyn Woods, oboe; and Peggy Schecter, flute. Lynn Erickson on trumpet will perform the most well-known part of the concerto.
