Erick to Become Hurricane by Late Monday or Tuesday

Tropical Storm Erick is gradually strengthening as it moves on a path quickly westward. The National Hurricane Center says Erick is expected to become a hurricane by late Monday or Tuesday.

At 11 a.m. HST on Sunday, July 28, 2019, the center of Tropical Storm Erick was located about 1665 miles ESE of Hilo, Hawaiʻi (near latitude 12.0 North, longitude 131.3 West).

Erick is moving toward the west near 17 mph and this general
motion is expected to continue for the next few days with a slight decrease in forward speed, according to the NHC.

“Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 45 mph with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast, and Erick is expected to become a hurricane by late Monday or early Tuesday,” forecasters with the NWS say.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 mb (29.65 inches).
