Candlelight Vigil to Honor Lives Lost to Domestic Violence

In observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a candlelight demonstration will be held this coming week to remember those who lost their lives to abusers.

Organizers say the event is also intended to show support for survivors.

“It’s important to honor the lives of those killed by an abuser and bring attention to the need to support victims, survivors, and their families,” Mahina Martin, one of the vigil organizers, said in a press release.

“As a community, in our families, our workplaces, our neighborhoods – zero tolerance for domestic violence can exist.”

During the vigil, the names of those throughout Hawai’i who lost their lives to domestic violence will be read aloud in remembrance.

The vigil will be held at 6 p.m. on Oct. 16 on the lawn of Ka’ahumanu Church in Wailuku. Candles will be provided.

Prior to the vigil, a sign waving will be staged in front of the county building at 5 p.m.
