Haʻikū Private School Gifted $75K in Grants

Two grants totaling $75,000 has been awarded to Roots School in Haʻikū.

The private, nonprofit school currently enrolls students from preschool to the 8th grade and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges and the Hawaiʻi Association of Independent Schools.

The Hawaiʻi Community Foundation recently gifted the school a prestigious $50,000 FLEX grant, which will offset the operational costs.

According to HCF officials, the FLEX grant was established to “provide unrestricted funding to high-performing nonprofits across the state that can demonstrate strengths in accountability, achievement of results, and community connectedness.”

In a statement, HCF explained that as a grantee, Roots School has “exemplified the best practices of high performance.”

The FLEX grant awarded to Roots School was funded through the Robert Emens Black Fund of the Hawai`i Community Foundation.

Roots School also received a generous $25,000 grant from the Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation. The funds will be used to install an absorption drain field on the school’s campus.

“This year our operating costs have increased, and the generosity of these organizations is inspiring,” head of school Melita Charan said in a press release.

“Community partners like the Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation and the Hawai`i Community Foundation allow us to achieve our goals of preparing children for success not only in school, but also in life.”
