Online briefing for Lahaina owner-occupant homeowners as no-cost property surveys move ahead

Lahaina owner-occupant homeowners are encouraged to register now for an online briefing on how to receive property surveys through the Lahaina Homeowner Recovery Program. Those who owned and lived on their Lahaina properties at the time of the August 2023 wildfire and need a property survey to move forward with home rebuilds are encouraged to register for the Zoom meeting on Wednesday, May 21, 5:30–6:30 p.m.
“This briefing is essential to set up homeowners for success in the program,” said Hawaiʻi Community Lending (HCL)’s Executive Director Jeff Gilbreath. “They have to go through the rebuilding process in the right order, or they could lose thousands of dollars, time and energy. The most impactful step Lahaina homeowners need to take right now is to do a comprehensive property survey, and thanks to the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation (HCF), this program covers that need.”
The program offers property surveys at no cost to Lahaina homeowners who lived in their home before the Aug. 8, 2023, Maui wildfires. Funding for the surveys was provided through a $3-million grant to HCL from the Maui Strong Fund of HCF.
The upcoming briefing will give an overview of the program and provide details on how the survey initiative can support the rebuild. In addition, a discussion of the timeline and key project milestones will help homeowners understand the process and what to expect at each stage. The briefing will wrap up with a Q&A and next steps.
According to HCL, the nonprofit responsible for administering the program, 813 homeowners were living in their homes before the fire. All of them will need a survey to set the property lines to rebuild or sell. The Lahaina Homeowner Recovery Program will save homeowners an estimated $4.5 million in survey costs.
“We want to be sure that all eligible homeowners can access this resource to successfully begin the rebuilding process without having to worry about the cost,” said Maria Linz, HCL program manager and Lahaina resident. “We encourage all Lahaina owner-occupant homeowners to register for the May 21 briefing and learn more about the no-cost lot survey process.”
