Mālama Hāmākua Maui, in collaboration with the Maui Invasive Species Committee, is seeking volunteers to help with coqui frog control efforts this Tuesday and Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The event will take place at Mālama Hāmākua Maui, located on the County of Maui Open Space Preserve in Haʻikū, where volunteers will assist in spraying for coqui frogs, an invasive species threatening the local ecosystem.

The coqui frog is known for its loud croaking and rapid population growth, which disrupts local wildlife, agriculture, and communities. By working with MISC to control the frog population, Mālama Hāmākua Maui is taking a critical step toward preserving Maui’s native plants and animals.

Volunteers should wear long sleeves, pants and sturdy shoes.

“We’re excited to join forces with MISC and our community to help protect Maui’s unique ecosystems,” said Maile Davis of Mālama Hāmākua Maui. “With the support of volunteers, we can make a significant impact on controlling the coqui frog population and safeguarding our native environment. This is a unique opportunity to work side by side with MISC and learn more about coqui control efforts on the ground.”

Volunteers are essential to the success of this effort, and Mālama Hāmākua Maui invites individuals who are passionate about preserving Maui’s natural beauty to join the cause. No prior experience is necessary, and all ages are welcome.
