Maui Ocean Safety officers recognized: 355 ocean rescues made in 2024

In commemoration of Hawaiʻi Water Safety Day on May 14, Ocean Safety officers were recognized for their work in responding to 355 ocean rescues in Maui County last year.

This included 245 rescues using watercraft, attending to 257 cases involving beachgoers in need of medical assistance, and 40 that required ambulance service. In 2024, Ocean Safety officers on Maui reported taking 162,634 preventive actions at the beaches, which were visited by 3,616,839 people last year.

County of Maui Chief of Staff Cynthia Lallo joined Fire Chief Brad Ventura, Ocean Safety Bureau Chief Zach Edlao, other Ocean Safety officials and members of Recruit Class 9 to commemorate the day and honor responders.

In proclaiming May 14 Hawaiʻi Water Safety Day, Mayor Richard Bissen encouraged beachgoers to prioritize safety while enjoying the ocean and recognized the critical role of Ocean Safety officers in protecting the lives of residents and visitors in nearshore waters.
