Forecasters tracking low pressure system SE of Hawaiʻi, expected to develop over next couple of days

Visible satellite imagery indicates that a well-defined low-level center has formed in association with the low pressure system located about 1,050 miles east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands, according to an afternoon update from the National Weather Service. However, the shower and thunderstorm activity remains disorganized, the NWS reports.

Environmental conditions are conducive for further development, and a tropical depression or storm is expected to form on Wednesday while the system moves generally west-northwestward at around 15 mph, according to the NWS forecast.

Interests in the Hawaiian Islands should closely monitor the progress of this system. The formation chance through 48 hours and through the next 7 days is high at around 90%.

The National Hurricane Center is tracking a broad area of low pressure east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands that is expected to develop within the next couple of days and move northwestward across the central Pacific.

The NHC reports that the system is currently located about 1,200 miles ESE of Hawaiʻi. There is a 70% chance of formation in the next 48 hours, and a 90% chance of formation through the next 7 days, according to the NHC.

Forecasters say showers and thunderstorms remain disorganized in association with the system, that appears to be reforming. “Environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for further development, and a tropical depression or storm is expected to form during the next couple of days.”

While there is uncertainty in the track and intensity, impacts could be seen potentially by this weekend in the form of fire weather, high winds, rain and large surf, according to the National Weather Service.

Residents are urged to prepare and stay updated with the latest forecasts and alerts.

The Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency reports the public should take the time to prepare their homes and families for possible heavy rain and high winds arriving as early Friday evening.
