SERVICE RESTORED: Water Outage Affects Parts of Haʻikū

County officials announced the full restoration of water service to customers in Haʻikū.

Earlier this morning, Maui Electric reported that all Maui County customers had been restored to full power.

“This includes the county water system, which as of yesterday was still down in the Haʻikū area,” said County Communications Director Rod Antone in a statement announcing the resumption of service.

Water service in Haʻikū is interrupted due to power outages in the area, according to information released this morning by the County of Maui.

Authorities say the outages resulted in empty tanks at Kokomo and Kaupakalua, disrupting water service to the Haʻikū wells affecting water service to the following areas:

• Kokomo Road
• Kaupakalua Road
• Kauhikoa Road
• ʻAwalau Road
• Lilikoʻi Road
• and all roads or streets off the above main roads

The Maui Department of Water Supply advises affected customers that there is a potable water tanker truck available at the top of the Hanzawa Store parking lot near ʻAwalau Road.  County officials say a second water tanker will be placed at Puʻuomalei Road, off of Kokomo Road.

“Last night power outages knocked out the Central Maui Water System, preventing the County from refilling water tanks once they ran dry,” said Lois Whitney, Communications Specialist with the Mayor’s Office.

“Because of this, residents of Hāna, Central Maui, South Maui, Upcountry Maui and Molokaʻi were asked to conserve water until further notice,” said Whitney.

Since then, Maui Electric has restored power to most areas.

The county has also narrowed its water conservation request to the Haʻikū area only.
