Live Streaming: Fire Prevention Week, Government Shutdown Briefing

In observance of Fire Prevention Week, Lieutenant Governor Shan Tsutsui will present a proclamation to the Hawaiʻi State Fire Council during a presentation at the State Capitol this morning, an announcement said.

“It is important for us to recognize our firefighters who risk their lives every day to ensure our safety and security,” said Tsutsui in a statement.

“During Fire Prevention Week, we would like to bring awareness to the prevention of kitchen fires. Cooking fires accounted for 44% of the total residential structure fires and 25% of civilian injuries from June 2010 to June 2013,” according to Fire Chief Manual Neves, chair of the Hawaiʻi State Fire Council.

The proclamation is planned for 10 a.m. in the Lieutenant Governor’s office, located on the 5th Floor of the State Capitol.

Immediately following the proclamation presentation, Tsutsui is expected to provide a brief update on federal government shutdown.

Earlier this week, Tsutsui released the following statement on the first day of the shutdown:

“It is extremely unfortunate that Congress was unable to reach agreement on a federal spending plan because a federal shutdown will ultimately negatively impact all states and could derail economic recovery. Governor Abercrombie’s Administration, including his financial team, has put forth tremendous effort over the last three years to improve the State of Hawaii’s financial condition by making tough choices that have put us on the path towards a healthy economy. We will continue to examine the potential impact of the shutdown on our State.”

Both events will be streamed live at the Lieutenant Governor’s website.

Later today, Tsutsui will also recognize outstanding State of Hawaiʻi employees at the annual Governor’s Awards Ceremony, scheduled to take place at 1:30 p.m. at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol Auditorium.

Employees being recognized were chosen as their departments’ employee, manager, and team of the year.

“This year, 17 team nominees, 12 manager nominees, and 18 employee nominees will be vying for the Governor’s Awards for State Team of the Year, Manager of the Year, and Employee of the Year,” officials announced.
