Mokulele Scrap Metal Fire Doused Overnight

A fire at Hammerhead Metals off of the Mokulele Highway in Puʻunēnē burned about three quarters of an acre of scrap metal, and a quarter acre of brush overnight.

The incident was initially reported as a rubbish bin fire at around 9:38 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014.

Fire officials say crews brought the scrap metal fire under control by 12:35 a.m., and had the fire extinguished by 6:50 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, 2014.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and no monetary losses or injuries were reported, according to Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

Crews responding to the scene included Engine 10, Hazmat 10, Tanker 10 and Rescue 10 from Kahului; Ladder 14 and Tanker 14 from Wailea; Engine 1 from Wailuku; two tankers from Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company; and a department fire inspector.
